THERE was brick-throwing drama in Bulawayo when a 20-year-old man from Newton West turned into a one-man demolition crew—all over a measly R5 change!
Proud Mwanza, of Newton West suburb, appeared before magistrate Mrs Evia Matura yesterday facing charges of malicious damage to property and assault. He was remanded in custody to May 13.
The court heard that on April 22, around 8AM, at the PP Jokes Shopping Centre, Mwanza allegedly blew a fuse when kombi owner Mr Abyolla Josi failed to give him his R5 change.
In the blink of an eye, he turned the kombi stop into a warzone. In a fit of rage, Mwanza is said to have grabbed half-bricks and launched them at the kombi, shattering its windscreen, shocking onlookers.
Things quickly turned physical.
“Mwanza allegedly pushed Abyolla and struck him in the face, chest and left eye with bricks,” Gurazhira said. “The victim sustained injuries and was referred to hospital. A medical report will be presented in court.”
Terrified commuters fled the scene, with some calling the police. Mwanza was arrested shortly after the incident.
Witnesses say the scene was chaotic.
“We thought it was a robbery. He just snapped and started throwing bricks like a madman,” said Thabani Ncube, a vendor who witnessed the drama.
“How can someone risk jail over R5? He could’ve just walked away or asked nicely,” said commuter Lindiwe Dube.
Another passenger said they feared for their lives.
“Bricks were flying — it was scary! What if one of us had been hit?” said Talent Moyo.
Mwanza will remain behind bars as investigations continue.
All this… over just R5!
