Rains destroy road in Mwenezi

Incessant rains that fell in Mwenezi have severely affected roads in the district, with some areas now virtually inaccessible by road.

The situation has been worsened by the absence of road making equipment at Mwenezi Rural District Council, which has been failing to regularly maintain roads in the remote district.

Mwenezi RDC chief executive Mr Albert Chivanga yesterday said most roads in the district were damaged by heavy rains and some council operations had stalled due to inaccessibility of some areas.

He said council could not repair the battered roads as its only grader was down.

“While the recent rains that have been falling are welcome, they left a trail of destruction on most roads in this district, making some areas inaccessible. One of the most damaged road is the one leading to Mwenezi RDC offices at Neshuro Growth Point,’’ he said.

Mr Chivanga said council was in a dilemma as it was failing to repair some of the damaged roads due to continuous rains.

“The only grader that we have is down as we speak. Even if we decide to find other means to start repairing the affected roads, we cannot do so at the moment because rains are still falling,” he said.

Mwenezi East National Assembly member Cde Joosbi Omar said he has since engaged Mwenezi RDC and DDF to find ways of resolving the problem of battered roads.

“I have already engaged the local authority over the grading of Neshuro Road because I am willing to assist council in that project.

“DDF has promised us a grader, but it has to be fixed first because it is not functioning,” said Cde Omar .
