Rains to persist: Met Department

THE Meteorological Services Department (MSD) yesterday said rains would continue throughout the country until Sunday.
The country has experienced a wet spell for over a week, bringing hopes of a good harvest to farmers.MSD meteorologist Lucy Samvura said the country would receive normal to above normal rains with thunderstorms expected in some provinces.

Cloudy conditions with rain are expected across the country today and tomorrow. “However, possible outbreaks of thunder and heavier falls are more likely in Matabeleland North, north of the Midlands, all Mashonaland provinces, Harare and north of Manicaland,” she said.

Samvura said the rains were expected to be lower on Saturday in some parts of the country.

“By Saturday January 3, the southern parts of the country are expected to have a significant reduction in rainfall activity. This includes areas in Matabeleland South, Bulawayo, south of the Midlands, Masvingo and south of Manicaland. To the north, there will still be abundant moisture and moderate to heavy rains are expected,” she said.

As from Sunday most parts of the country are expected to be dry. From Sunday to Tuesday most of the country is expected to be relatively dry.

“More sun is expected to be shining and a consequent rise in temperatures is expected. However to the extreme north of the country in areas in Mashonaland West and Central there will still be a possibility of showers on Sunday January 4,” Samvura said.

Meanwhile, the Civil Protection Unit yesterday said it was prepared for any natural disasters like floods that may occur.
