LEARNERS at Hillcrest College in Mutare are taking turns to shine in national and regional academic related assignments after Hannah Raja successfully represented the country in the East Africa Debate and Public Speaking Championships in Kenya, recently.

Raja proudly hoisted the Hillcrest College flag as she represented Zimbabwe at the East Africa Debate and Public Speaking Championships held in Nairobi, Kenya recently, barely a week after another Hillcrest College learner, Maranatha Mautsa clinched the Cambridge Best Results award in Zimbabwe for IGCSE First Language English October-November.

Raja was awarded the Most Potential Speaker out of the whole competition.

The college’s principal, Ms Sarah Shoesmith, said “We joyfully celebrate this achievement, and extend heartfelt thanks to coach, Mr Joseph Matanda, Ms Rudo Gandanzara, and Mrs Rachel Chidembo for their unwavering dedication and mentorship.

“We are so proud of her, and also acknowledge the partnership that she had with our English Department, and in particular, the teaching and guidance of Mrs Chidembo.”

On Mautsa’s outstanding achievement, Mrs Shoesmith wrote: “I am extremely honoured to be invited, along with Maranatha, her family and Mrs Chidembo to a special dinner hosted by Cambridge International in Harare, to celebrate her, and other learners who achieved outstanding results in their exams.

“Our school continues to work hard to get the very best academic results from our pupils. All our teachers are fully invested in the Continuous Professional Development program that was rolled out this term.”

Raja and Mautsa’s achievements are an epitome on new principal, Mrs Shoesmith’s stance to turn Hillcrest College into a top learning institution, not only in Zimbabwe, but the region, inspired by her experience at, both local ATS schools like Peterhouse College, and international experience, having worked at top UK institutions.
