A MUTARE woman tried to arm-twist her ex-husband to maintain their child by making false rape accusations against him.

After the chicanery failed, Memory Mafudza dragged Joshua Chibuwe to Mutare Magistrates Civil Court, applying for US$100 maintenance from him.

The duo appeared before Mutare magistrate, Mr Xavier Chipato, but Chibuwe vowed not to pay anything as he doubts the paternity of the child.

Chibuwe said he doubts the paternity of the child as Mafudza was once married to another man.

“I cannot pay maintenance because I am doubting the paternity of this child. When I started seeing Mafudza, I did not know that she was a married woman as she stayed alone. I got wind of it after I was told by someone else. Her husband was staying and working in South Africa and would come back home occasionally.

“I asked her and she did not dispute that. I even asked her if she slept with him during his visits and she confirmed that. As a result I decided to stop seeing her,” said Chibuwe.

He said after they had parted ways, Mafudza approached him claiming to be pregnant.

“I could not accept the responsibility of the pregnancy since she had confirmed sleeping with her South African-based lover.

“She decided to frame me for rape. She made a police report against me, but she failed to substantiate the claim,” said Chibuwe.

Mafudza said Chibubwe knew that she was married when they started dating, but was trying to run away from the responsibility of taking care of the child as he is now married and has two other children.

“Chibuwe knew that I was married, but my husband was in South Africa where he was working. He would rarely come back home and because of that, we later divorced.

“I continued with my relationship with Chibuwe who later dumped me when I was pregnant,” said Mafudza.

The court ordered Chibuwe to pay $70 000 every month until they undergo a DNA test to establish the paternity of the child.
