A 21-year-old Shurugwi rapist caused a stir at the Gweru magistrate’s court on Monday when he faked madness, insulting prison officers and claiming to be seeing strange things. This resulted in the postponement of his trial.
Trymore Chinhamo started acting mad when his rape trial was mid-way through.
In an apparent bid to escape being convicted, Chinhamo started yelling at prison officers demanding his release while pretending to be seeing strange things.
However, his shenanigans could not buy him the freedom he so desired as he was brought back to court Tuesday and was convicted of raping a three-year old girl.
He will be sentenced today.
Regional magistrate, Morgan Nemadire, was forced to postpone the trial before recommending that Chinhamo be examined by a psychiatrist.
The psychiatrist concluded that Chinhamo was mentally sound.
Witnesses said Chinhamo was behaving like a possessed person.
“Everyone in the courtroom was shocked by the manner in which he was behaving. It appeared like he was possessed.
“He started screaming and shouting at the prison officers telling them to rescue him and let him go as he was seeing strange things which were tormenting him,” said a witness.
For the State Ndamukanei Chikuni told the court that on an unknown date but between 15 and 17 October last year Chinhamo who worked as a herdboy at a homestead belonging to the girl’s parents in Mvuma went with the minor to fetch water at the nearby Sedza River.
While at the river, Chinhamo sexually abused the complainant.
The matter came to light on October 17 when the complainant’s grandmother observed that the complainant was experiencing difficulties in walking.
The grandmother then interviewed the complainant who relived her ordeal.
She was later taken to Mvuma Hospital for treatment.
The matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of Chinhamo.
