A Karoi man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for raping and robbing a 51-year-old woman.

Vitalis Chipomwe (22) of Nyama Village in Karoi appeared before the Karoi Magistrates’ Court facing one count of rape and

another of robbery.

On July 24, 2024, the 51-year-old woman closed her shop and retired to bed just behind the shop.

In the early hours of the following morning, she heard her bedroom door being opened forcibly.

She woke up and saw Chipomwe standing at the door.

He had immersed his body with ashes.

The woman screamed for help but Chipomwe charged towards her and grabbed her neck and choked her.

He then assaulted the woman with a screwdriver and another sharp object before raping her.

After the act, Chipomwe used a wooden log to assault the woman until she became unconscious.

When the woman eventually regained her consciousness, she discovered that US$500 was missing from her shop.

She sustained deep cuts on both eyes, a fractured jaw, a bruised lower part of the right eye, a deep cut on her lower lip and one

of her teeth fell out.
