A MAN from Lusulu in Binga raped his niece, 10, and claimed the devil instructed him in Shona to ravish the child. The 25-year-old rapist uncle, who cannot be named to protect the girl, told a court Satan told him the act would assist him to test how fast his blood could circulate in his body. “I made a mistake your worship. It was the devil that influenced me,” said the man. “He was a spirit and he spoke in Shona saying I should do it so I can feel my blood running. Unfortunately I didn’t get to feel my blood because my father caught me in the act,” explained the man when asked by Hwange regional magistrate Dambudzo Malunga, why he committed the crime.
The rapist uncle pleaded guilty to rape and Malunga jailed him for 13 years. Prosecuting, Tawanda Sigauke said the man was working in a garden with his niece in June this year, when he suddenly attacked her. “On June 27 at 10AM the two were working in the garden when the accused went outside the garden and later instructed the complainant to bring him a machete,” he said.
The court heard that the girl brought the machete to her uncle but he immediately grabbed her by the hand as she was handing it over to him. “He dragged her into the bush where he raped her once. The complainant cried for help in the process and the accused covered her mouth with his hand to stifle the noise. He was caught pants down by his father and he fled the scene,” added the prosecutor.
The family reported the matter to police in Lusulu leading to the uncle’s arrest.
