Rapper KayGee 40 bounces back

MUTARE-BORN rapper and Afro Soul singer, KayGee 40 is working on releasing his singles collection at the end of March. Trevor Rufaro Goustino, better known by his stage name KayGee 40 made his debut in 2005 after releasing his first single, Hip-Hop Movement which he did with renowned music producer, C Bleech.

The 16-track singles collection, My Journey carries tracks such as Apa Tione, Rudo Rwevaviri, the hit single, Brand New Day, a gospel track, Zvose Kamuri featuring Mr Noxa and Mutare Moto featuring Kritic Igwee among others.

“The reason behind releasing this singles collection is to update my fans and those who do not know me as yet about my whole catalogue. Very soon I will be releasing my first album,” he said.

The singer who has since relocated to Harare for greener pasture said his music was doing very well on the local market and believes Harare offers better opportunities compared to Mutare.

“My music is doing great. Moving to the capital city has really helped me. Most of my tracks have been doing well on StarFM and PowerFM. This year I did two singles, Brand New Day and Iwe fara which are already making waves on radio stations. So far I have performed at some big stages in Zimbabwe. Last year I was invited to perform at HIFA, Shoko Festival and Tariro ne Gitare Acoustic nights. This year was appointed brand ambassador for NetOne on Valentine’s Day.

“I believe Harare has better opportunities than our city thou we cannot doubt the talent. Mutare as a city has produced quite a lot of talented artistes. We only need some people especially those in business to invest in our artistes and we need to celebrate our own heroes’ achievements. The other challenge we face as artistes is money.

“We, as artistes we fund ourselves in almost everything and later alone our upkeep. The input does not match with the output and just a few musicians are earning a living out of music. We need full support and Government should intervene on the issue of piracy. Piracy has killed our music,” he said.

KayGee who is also a music teacher at Valiant Primary School in Harare revealed his future plans.

“My biggest dream is to perform all over the world and to build a music school in Mutare. So far, I am working on building my own recording studio running under the name 40 Music. I have some artistes who are willing to work with me. I have already done production for Kritic Igwee, Trae Yung and Nizzy Rapps. I also have a clothing label, 40 Music Wear. The studio will be in full operation from August this year,” he said.
