An official made the historic but expected announcement at the closing ceremony of the Sixth Communist Party Congress, attended by Raul’s brother, Fidel, who had confirmed his resignation hours earlier.
The party’s new Central Committee, appointed Monday night, also named Vice President Jose Ramon Machado, 80, as the new second secretary and Raul Castro’s number-two.
Among other party changes, the new politburo has been trimmed down from 19 to 15, including three new members. – Xinhua-AFP.
