THE Minister of Energy and Power Development, Cde Dzikamai Mavhaire, has challenged the people in Chimanimani District to make use of the ongoing electrification process to alleviate poverty and facilitate self sustenance.

Speaking at the commissioning of electricity at Shinja Secondary School recently, Cde Mavhaire also urged the people in the district to make use of alternative power sources like biogas and solar energy to complement the electrification process.

“The electrification process is a good thing, but I am challenging all of you to use this opportunity of rural electrification to put the electricity to good use.

“Now that Chimanimani has been electrified, I expect women and the unemployed youths to take up various projects like welding and agriculture. Everyone should take the issue of entrepreneurship seriously.

“Besides electricity, you can also make use of solar and biogas as alternative sources of energy. Those who have not yet electrified their homes can use these forms of energy in the mean time,” he said.

Speaking at the same occasion, Deputy Minister of Energy and Power Development, Engineer Munacho Mutezo, applauded the 128 families that have already electrified their homes, saying they were pacesetters in as far as supporting the Zim-Asset blueprint of self sustenance and poverty alleviation was concerned.

Said Engineer Mutezo:“When I came here I learnt that over 128 households have already been electrified through individual efforts.

“This shows that the people of Chimanimani are committed to the Zim-Asset programme. I am now calling upon Non-Governmental Organisations to partner with organisations like Rural Electrification Agency to help electrify the rest of Zimbabwe’s rural areas.”
