Reality check…Warriors thrashed in Marinica’s first assignment

ZIMBABWE were handed a tough welcome into the Marian Mario Marinica era after falling 3-1 to Algeria in an international friendly at Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Sports City Stadium in Jeddah last night. The new Warriors coach stepped into the dugout with hope and curiosity around his methods, but the contest quickly revealed how far his side still need to go.

Algeria punished Zimbabwe’s early defensive lapses and walked into the break with a commanding lead through Baghdad Bounedjah, Mohammed Amoura and Jaouen Hadjam. Their tempo, movement and precision pinned the Warriors deep for long spells, and the gap between the sides felt clear as both nations prepare for next month’s Afcon finals in Morocco.

Zimbabwe barely touched the ball in the opening exchanges. The Desert Foxes controlled possession and pressed from the wings while the backline of Gerald Takwara, Munashe Garanganga, Teenage Hadebe and Brendan Galloway absorbed wave after wave of attacks. They held their shape as long as they could, but Bounedjah finally broke through in the 14th minute, sweeping home a low cross from Amoura.

Instead of settling, the Warriors found themselves chasing shadows. The midfield struggled to keep up with Algeria’s quick combinations and could not create anything meaningful for Washington Navaya. The local Premiership top scorer earned his first start for the national team, but Zimbabwe could not get the ball to him in the right spaces.

Tawanda Chirewa

Amoura doubled the lead after 41 minutes with a sharp finish inside the box. The Wolfsburg attacker had far too much room as the Warriors retreated, and his strike flew past Washington Arubi. Hadjam then pounced on a loose clearance from Hadebe to make it three just before the break.

Algeria threatened more damage in the second half. Rayan Ait-Nouri went clean through in the 56th minute but chipped wide, and Arubi later produced a brilliant block to deny Mounsef Bakrar from close range after a cross by Rafik Belghali.

Zimbabwe never looked like scoring in open play. Marinica rang the changes, introducing six substitutes, and the energy improved when Tawanda Chirewa and Prosper Padera came on. Chirewa eventually pulled one back from the penalty spot with two minutes left, offering a small reward for a much better second half.

The Warriors now turn their focus to Monday’s friendly against Qatar in the same Fifa window, hoping to show clearer signs of adjustment under their new coach.
