Reconsider decision on smart meters: Mayor

THE City of Harare has implored Zesa Holdings to consider public interest in its decision to install smart meters on tower lights.

Harare Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume told the 1937th Ordinary Council meeting last Friday at Townhouse that Zesa installed smart meters on all tower lights in high-density suburbs and was expected to put smart meters on traffic lights.

“I understand that the tower lights in high-density suburbs were having issues. The issue is they put smart meters on all our tower lights and they want to put smart meters on traffic lights,” he said.

“My position on the issue is that it sounds very good on paper, but it is inimical to put smart meters on tower lights and traffic lights. What if the meter runs out of credit on a traffic light, a car then gets involved in an accident?” he asked.

Clr Mafume, who met Zesa officials, said he left them to discuss the way forward with the city’s finance department.

“I have been advised by councillors who come from high-density suburbs that tower lights are still a problem. We are imploring Zesa to consider the common good concerning tower lights, people are being robbed, they cannot put these smart meters on tower lights unless we come up with a mutual arrangement. So we will continue talking to Zesa,” he said.
