GOVERNMENT is providing a lifeline to local authorities, with Rusape Town Council being the latest beneficiary of the benevolent gesture after receiving US$250 000 for the purchase of a state-of-the-art refuse compactor.
Rusape was operating with one compactor which was constantly breaking down due to old age.
A tractor was also being used to collect refuse.
In some instances, council would go for months without collecting garbage in some areas, resulting in the proliferation of undesignated dumpsites.
Speaking at the hand-over ceremony of the refuse compactor, town chairman, Councillor Blessmore Pambureni praised Government for coming to the local authority’s rescue, saying the council has managed to acquire critical machinery and equipment through funding from the State.
“We have purchased this refuse compactor using funds availed by Government through the devolution programme. We were unable to raise that kind of money due to resources constraints. We are grateful to Government for rescuing us. Residents will witness improved refuse collection because we now have two compactors and a tractor,” said Councillor Pambureni.
Makoni District Assistant District Development coordinator, Mr Darlington Museka said councils should reciprocate Government’s efforts by offering quality service delivery to ratepayers.
“Government has played its role by providing funds for this compactor, now the ball is in council’s court to make sure the town is always clean. There are no more excuses for shoddy service delivery,” said Mr Museka.
