WITH this year’s edition of the African Union Sports Council Region 5 marathon registering an improvement in terms of the numbers, the organisers believe they are on the right track to grow the event.

The regional event comprising of 21.1km, 10km and 5km races, and 1 mile race dedicated for athletes with disabilities saw more than 5 000 athletes converging at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, South Africa.

This is the second year South Africa have hosted after last year’s edition which came upon a return from a five-year hiatus due to the covid pandemic.

And AUCS Region 5 chief executive Stanley Mutoya is confident of a bigger event next year.

“The sixth edition of the Region 5 Marathon has been a resounding success.

“Success in a number of ways.

“Number one, last year we had over 3 500 runners and we have had an improvement up to 5 300 runners who have been here, which is a huge increase in numbers and popularity of the event,” Mutoya.

The regional marathon is held under the theme “Africa United.”

South Africa and Namibia produced outstanding performances to dominate the event.

Other Region 5 member countries that were represented included Eswatini, Lesotho, Botswana and Malawi.  Besides participants from the region, the race also attracted athletes competing as individuals from countries such as Kenya.

“We are excited with the strides we have made. We are excited with the race having gone according to our plan.

“And we look forward now to bring a bigger event in 2027. Our plans are to open the registration from the 1st of July to allow people enough time. I know that our registration this time was very short,” Mutoya said.

The event combines elite competition and community participation, promoting healthy lifestyles.

“This race is more than just a race. It’s a convergence of our athletes. It’s a solidarity of our countries, but also, it’s a platform for excellence.”

The AUSC Region 5 chief executive believe the race can also serve as a platform for marathon runners to step up their preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, for those that would have qualified and seeking qualification by then.

“So, next year will be very critical as we prepare for Los Angeles 2028, including preparations as well for athletes who are running in the marathon,” added Mutoya.

Race coordinator Enoch Skosana said the Region 5 Marathon is not just about competition but also for member countries to help each other grow the sport.

“I think this year’s event has improved when we talk about the numbers…Also, this year we have different countries.

“The competition was very tough for the countries. At least they did well because this race is all about uniting Africans so that we can share the culture. Because it’s not all about running, it’s also about the culture.

“To understand each other so that we can grow the sport

“It is very important for the African nations to come together so that we can improve our sport. We can improve our understanding and then we can work together. Even our economy will grow,” Skosana said.

The event is set to return to Pretoria again next year for the seventh edition.
