PRESIDENT Mnangagwa will today join his regional counterparts for the commemorations of the UNICEF World Children’s Day in Kazungula, the quadripoint where Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia meet.
He will be joined by Botswana President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi, Namibian President Hage Geingob and Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema.
This year’s annual World Children’s Day will be held under the theme “Reimagining the Future”, a new initiative that seeks to give children and young people the space to engage in defining the vision they want for their future and future generations.
Posting on micro-blogging site Twitter, Unicef said: “UNICEF Namibia will join UNICEF Botswana UNICEF Zambia and UNICEF Zimbabwe at an event at the Kazungula Bridge, where the borders of the four countries meet. The bridge will be lit up blue to showcase how children’s voices have no borders.
“This #WorldChildrensDay we celebrate 75 years of building inclusive systems for children with disabilities.
“Their lives count, their rights matter and so do their dreams and hopes for the future.”
The World Children’s Day is UNICEF’s annual day of action for children, by children and this year the day is being observed on the back of the ravaging Covid-19 pandemic which has disrupted children’s lives, particularly access to education.
“The Covid-19 pandemic has shown how inequality affects the rights of every child,” said UNICEF. “From climate change, education and mental health, to ending racism and discrimination, children and young people are raising their voices on the issues that matter to their generation and calling for adults to create a better future.
“This World Children’s Day, it’s more important than ever that leaders listen to their ideas and demands.”
Children representatives from the four countries will be part of the programme.
