Regional tennis players expected at Zim Open

Tennis Zimbabwe (TZ) administrator Cliff Nhokwara said they received enquiries from South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho and Zambia. He said registration for the country’s biggest tennis tournament closes at the weekend and only then would they know which countries are participating in the competition.
Registration fee for the tournament is $30.

“Registration is underway and it closes on Saturday. It has been slow but I think by the end of the week it will be busy. There are players from South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho and Zambia who want to come but they haven’t confirmed as yet,” said Nhokwara. United States of America duo of Benjamin Lock and Valeria Bhunu are the men and women’s defending champions respectively.
Nhokwara said they were expecting the defending champions to participate at the tournament and they would return to their foreign base in January.

Some of the players expected to compete at the tournament include Gwinyai Tongoona, Mlandeli Ndlela, Martin Dzuwa and Malcom Mtungamiri.
Inaugural Girls College Tennis Centre Singles League champion Thesly Mufunda, Gavin Magenga, Nkanyiso Sibanda and Stephen Chiwanza are some of the Bulawayo players expected to participate at the tournament.

The winner of the men’s category will get $1 200 with the runner-up pocketing $700. The player that lifts the women’s title will take home  $1 000 and the losing finalist $600.
