adminThe dam, which also provides water to wild animals from Botswana and Hwange National Park, almost dried up this year after failing to accumulate much water after its wall breached.
In an interview with Chronicle in Plumtree last week, Bulilima district administrator, Mrs Ethel Moyo said the breached wall was repaired.
“We have successfully rehabilitated the dam and as we speak, it has accumulated a lot of water from the rains we have received so far.
“This is a significant achievement for us because the dam is the major source of water to the surrounding communities and wild animals,” said Mrs Moyo who is also the council’s chief executive officer.
“The project was done by Bulilima Rural District Council through a private contractor using proceeds from a conservancy in the area. We had budgeted about $40 000 for the project but we used less because the repairs were done quickly.”
On farming in the district, Mrs Moyo said a majority of farmers were still planting because the rains started late.
“The rains delayed this year and most people started ploughing this month. However, since the rains started everyone is busy planting.
“We also pay tribute to the Government and President Mugabe for assisting us with inputs. We are happy that all the inputs have been fairly distributed.”
She urged villagers in the district to work hard and use the inputs effectively in order to boost food production.
