REIGATE District won a gold medal in the physical education segment of the National Association of Primary School Heads (Naph) Bulawayo Metropolitan inter-district competitions held at White City Stadium yesterday. Physical education (PE) was the main attraction of the day with all five districts Khami, Reigate, Bulawayo Central, Imbizo and Mzilikazi competing in drama, gymnastics and drills.
Falsetto FAM (Pvt) a computer accessories company has been sponsoring PE competitions for the past three years in Bulawayo.
Company director Nhlanhla Ncube said they were eager to see the sport grow so that it becomes recognised.
“This is a way of giving back. Most schools were not taking PE seriously but if there are competitions it can grow to an exciting sport, which is good for the kids’ health,” said Ncube.
In the long distance competition, Imbizo District female pupil Moreblessing Mgumigwa scooped double gold medal in the 800 and 1,500m for the Under-14 girls category.
In field events Mkhokheli Ncube won two gold medals in the Under-14 boys shotputt and discus events, throwing 21,87m and 8,26m respectively.
The track and field segment is sponsored by Nestle Zimbabwe.
Bulawayo is using the competition to select the team to represent the province at the national finals in Hwange later this month.
Nestle are sponsoring this year’s competitions to the tune of $180,000 under the slogan “A healthy mind in a healthy body.”
Bulawayo Province Naph chairman Njabulo Bango said he was happy with the level of competition.
“Today’s events were well organised. We finished our events in time. We hope to do the same tomorrow.
“Our focus is to select a strong team for the nationals. Our target is to haul most of the prizes in both athletics and PE,” he said.
