BULAWAYO-based gold miners How Mine’s poor run continued yesterday when they were edged by relegated Dongo Sawmill in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match at Luveve Stadium. Elias Stephin scored the solitary goal from close range in the third minute. How Mine have not won in 13 matches and last tasted victory on July 12 when they pipped relegation threatened Buffaloes 1-0.

The club parted ways with coach Luke Masomere in September due to a string of poor results, but their fortunes continued to plummet and they just survived relegation by Tsholotsho’s failure to win their games. How Mine is on 34 points while Tsholotsho has 30 points with one game remaining.

The gold miners had been touted as a potential indomitable force in local football after acquiring what appeared to be a “galaxy” of stars in January. They brought in former Highlanders’ striker Charles Sibanda, former Dynamos midfielders Devon Chafa and Tawanda Muparati, former Bosso goalie Munyaradzi Diya, and ex-Caps United skipper Tapiwa Khumbuyani.

The team was on fire at the beginning of the season but somehow fell off the wagon in mid-season resulting in them parting ways with nomadic coach Masomere. Interim co-coach Jeremiah Makota was disappointed at losing to the bottom of the log team.

“It’s very disappointing to lose to Dongo, who have been relegated. We had hoped to win this match but in football there’s no small or big team anymore. We wanted to finish on a better position but this has proved to be difficult. Dongo played impressively and got the points in the end,” Makota said.

Shadreck Mugurashe, the Dongo Sawmill coach, said he was impressed by the way his team had played regardless of their status. “We’re already out of the league but the battle is not yet over until it’s over. Our situation doesn’t mean we’ve to do any favours to any team.

“We’re still going to give our best till the end of the season,” he said.
