AS National Sport Associations prepare for the return of sport, following the approval of all codes to resume activities, they say the development is a huge relief.

Judo Association of Zimbabwe president, Smart Deke, said they were in a difficult situation as they were trying to come up with a team for the African Union Sports Council Region Five Youth Games, in December, in Lesotho.

“This has actually come as a relief, I think, for all sport codes. We were all crying for this to actually happen,’’ said Deke.

“We were really going through a tough time, trying to have a team together when people were not training.

“Our regional technical director was actually asking for a team that we can send to the Lesotho Games.

“Judo is one of the sport codes which have qualified for the Games this year, despite the Covid situation.’’

Deke said they are going to assist their athletes, and clubs, to meet the Covid-19 requirements. They were also encouraging their athletes, and officials, to be vaccinated.

Zimbabwe Aquatic Union president, Mary Kloppers, said they had already planned for a new season and the announcement came at the right time.

Triathlon Zimbabwe secretary-general, Carol Pakenham, said it was a huge relief.

“We will be releasing a statement shortly, yes, we are hugely relieved that sport can resume again,” said Pakenham.

Hockey Association of Zimbabwe have the Under-21 women’s team going to the Junior World Cup in December, in South Africa.

National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe president, Tendai Tagara, said it was a positive development. “We are almost off-season, in terms of track and field but, in terms of road races, this is when the marathon runners are gearing for the World Championships and the qualifying period is already open.

“It gives them the opportunity, in terms of being released, from the work place, going to training, and so forth.

“But, we are encouraging them to train in small numbers so that they minimise the risk of getting Covid.

“We are just hoping that the prevailing conditions will continue until November, December.’’ The Basketball Union of Zimbabwe urged their members to be vaccinated for a safe return of the sport. “Basketball is officially back, as of the 1st September 2021. If you aren’t already vaccinated, BUZ is strongly recommending that you do so and contribute to the safe resumption of our sport.” The Sports and Recreation Commission announced conditions under which National Sport Associations can resume their activities.

“The following additional conditions shall also apply, as appropriate:

  1. It is strongly recommended that all athletes, including children who are of fourteen years in age and above, be vaccinated. In this respect, the SRC will liaise with NSAs for implementation.
  2. All athletes, including children under the age of fourteen years are to adhere to all Covid-19 protocols as appropriate to the sporting activity.
  3. All staff at sports facilities to be vaccinated before the admission of patrons.
