COMMUTERS in Mutare have welcomed the downward review of fares by Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) after a sudden hike last week.
ZUPCO buses fare had gone up from $30 to $60 while those for omnibuses were pegged at $60 from $80 for a distance between 0 to 20 kilometres.
However, the public transporter reviewed the fares this week and revised them downwards to $40 and $60 respectively.
Commuters commended ZUPCO for slashing the fares, saying it will ease their transport burden.
Some of them had even resorted to riding on the banned pirate kombis and taxis that ply the mushikashika routes as an alternative. Mushikashika fares were slightly lower than those that were being charged by ZUPCO when the increase was effected.
Mrs Maria Kapemberere of Chikanga said: “We welcome this slash in fares and are happy because it is now affordable. ZUPCO buses should always be cheaper than mushikamushika kombis, but it had become vice-vesra.”
