The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society last week came to the rescue of 25 Stapleford families who lost valuables when their homes were destroyed by fire recently.
The organisation donated shelter kits, kitchen sets, soap, clothes, water buckets and petroleum jelly to the affected families last Friday.
ZRCS secretary general Mr Maxwell Phiri said they felt compelled to assist.
“The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society is an auxiliary to Government and a member of the Civil Protection Unit so when the local District Administrator wrote to us requesting relief support after the outbreak we had to react swiftly to alleviate human suffering. Disasters of this nature are multi-faceted, but as a humanitarian and disaster relief organisation we had to rush in with emergency relief aid. However, more still needs to be done given that they lost all their food supplies, clothes, medication for those on drugs and documents in the fire. It is our hope that more partners come on board to assist,” he said.
Mr Phiri said psycho-social support was also required given that the victims lost their treasured belongings.
Stapleford Farm is located about 20 kilometres from Harare along the Chinhoyi Highway.
It is home to hundreds of farm workers.
