The MDC-T Renewal Team yesterday postponed the hearing into Morgan Tsvangirai’s case of allegedly contravening the party’s constitution to next week. The team’s spokesperson Mr Jacob Mafume confirmed the postponement in a statement yesterday. “The tribunal that was appointed to hear the disciplinary matter brought by the MDC National Council against suspended party president Morgan Tsvangirai set today in Harare to consider the issue,” he said.
“Although it managed to set ground rules over disciplinary hearing, the tribunal, however, postponed the matter to next week, 27 June due to various complex legal issues.
“All concerned parties will be notified by the tribunal of postponement.”
Mr Tsvangirai is facing 17 charges of contravening the party’s constitution and was suspended by the Renewal Team in April.
Mr Mafume said the panel presiding over the matter was made up of three lawyers although he did not name them.
The three lawyers earlier mentioned were Mr Dumisani Mthombeni, Mr Tafadzwa Mugabe and Mr Gift Nyandoro.
Mr Mthombeni distanced himself from the Renewal Team’s activities.
Mr Mafume said he would issue another statement on the tribunal today.
“We will be issuing a statement on the issue, but the Dumisani Mthombeni you mentioned in your story is not the one who was presiding over the matter,” he said.
Mr Tsvangirai’s spokesperson Mr Luke Tamborinyoka reiterated that they would not be party to any of the MDC-T Renewal Team’s activities.
“Just like I said yesterday, we have maintained our position and it stands,” he said. “In any case, we are not even going to attend their kangaroo court.
“The resolutions that will come out of their meetings they don’t matter to us. The decisions of a kangaroo court cannot bind anyone.”
Mr Mthombeni wrote to Mr Mafume yesterday registering his displeasure on being associated with the squabbles in the MDC factions.
“I found this to be extremely upsetting and equally unprofessional given the fact that, first and foremost, you never consulted me to inquire whether or not I was interested in presiding over such a process or if at all I wanted to be associated with it at any level,” he wrote.
“Secondly, you and your colleagues within your political party are well aware that I am not a member of your political party and have never associated with your political party at any stage.”
