A RENOWNED Bulawayo economist Steve Notho Maliwa Mhlanga who died on 30 December after a short illness at the age of 62 was laid to rest on Friday at Umvutshwa Cemetery in the city.
His younger brother, Goodman Mhlanga described Steve as a remarkable individual, deeply cherished as a husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.
“Steve adored his family. He shared a profound bond with his wife, Sipokazi and was a dedicated father to seven children: Nosipho, Mthulisi, LeRoy, Gugulethu, Mthabisi, Sinenhl’inkosi and Sinothisi.
He was also a proud grandfather to five grandchildren – Thandeka, Jaden, Rumbi, Rufaro and Jolly.
“His warmth, wisdom and kindness touched countless lives leaving an indelible legacy. Steve’s memory will continue to live on in the hearts of his loved ones and those he inspired. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered,” said Mr Mhlanga.
Born in Bulawayo, Steve completed his primary education in Zvishavane before moving on to Matopo and Fletcher High Schools for his Ordinary and Advanced Levels, respectively.
He was a man of intelligence, determination and had an unwavering passion for learning throughout his life.
He excelled academically, earning degrees and qualifications from prestigious institutions such as the University of Zimbabwe, NUST and Wits Business School.
This solid educational foundation paved the way for a successful career that spanned numerous industries and countries.
“Steve worked with organizations such as Lonhro Zimbabwe, Delta Beverages (where he was associated with Coca-Cola Zimbabwe and Chibuku Breweries), Cold Storage Zimbabwe (CSC), Dunlop, Gillette South Africa and SAMRO, all while managing several businesses,” recounted Mr Mhlanga.
Known for his work ethic, humility and integrity, Steve left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Among those who attended his funeral were retired High Court judge, Justice Maphios Cheda, Zanu-PF Politburo member Cde Richard Ndlovu, sports administrator Nyararai Sibanda and various other dignitaries from the business community.
