THE Harare City Council has not been repairing faulty traffic lights on most roads on time turning intersections into nightmare zones for motorists.
Traffic jams are now the order of the day at most intersections, especially during peak hours.
Some of the traffic lights have gone for months without being repaired, prompting the Zimbabwe Republic Police, at times, to control traffic.
Some traffic lights were pulled down to facilitate civil works months ago but the Council has failed to install the lights back.
Residents on social media have been pleading with Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume to fix all the faulty traffic lights.
One Twitter user, Tjiyapo, said there was a need to urgently replace the traffic lights at the corner of Sam Nujoma and Josiah Tongogara Avenue.
“There is a lot of congestion and accidents which happen on the spot, this has to be addressed.”
Another user, Tinotenda Matayi, said the Council should fix the traffic lights at the corner of Simon Muzenda and Robert Mugabe Road.
Mayor Mafume said he would look into it.
“Let me ask for it to be looked into and see what the hold-up is. Thank you for bringing it to our attention,” he said.
Intersections with non-working traffic lights include Samora Machel Avenue and Glenara Avenue, Leopold Takawira and Herbet Chitepo, Harare Drive and Lomagundi Road Mutare and Delpot roads, Emmerson Mnangagwa Road and Harare Drive.
