OVER 3 500 youths in Manicaland are expected to benefit from the Manicaland Youths Housing Scheme which is being rolled out in Chipinge Town.
The programme to avail the stands to youths at affordable prices was shelved in 2017 due to logistical challenges.
Chipinge Town Council is responsible for ensuring that all beneficiaries acquire their residential stands.
In a notice published in the Press, acting Chipinge Town Council secretary, Mr James Mutemera, said the first batch of applicants will be those who paid various amounts in 2017 before the programme was shelved.
“Notice is given in terms of Section 152 of the Urban Councils Act as read with Section 4.2 of Chipinge Town Council Housing Policy and Procedures Manual that Chipinge Town Council will be offering 2 336 high density, 751 medium density, 118 low density and ultra-low density residential stands as well as 47 commercial and 36 institutional stands in the Manicaland Youths Housing Scheme located at Reitvlei Farm, Chipinge Town, to applicants on the council’s waiting list.
“Applicants shall be invited for interviews to be held starting on Wednesday, August 2, at council main offices until the first batch of applicants is completed. Dates for the new applicants will be set afterwards.
“Occupation of any offered stand for development purposes will be permitted after fully servicing,” reads part of the statement.
In an interview, Zanu PF Manicaland provincial youth chairman, Cde Stan Sakupwanya said the programme is being spearheaded by the ruling party’s youths in the province.
“We initiated this project in 2017, but it failed to take off due to logistical challenges, said Cde Sakupwanya.
“Now that the programme is running, no single dollar will be handed to individuals. All payments will be made to Chipinge Town Council. This is meant to curb corruption.
“There are fair and affordable conditions of payment. The land we have is not developed, so there is need for money to pay land developers and council is there to assist us to make this project a success,” said Cde Sakupwanya.
He added that the scheme will also be introduced in other districts.
