RESIDENTS have blamed the Harare City Council for the current cholera outbreak, citing poor sanitary conditions in high-density suburbs such as Glen View, Mbare, Budiriro, Mufakose and Dzivarasekwa.
In the past few weeks, Harare has reported more than 50 cholera cases, including 40 suspected cases from a wedding.
A city resident, Veronica Joseph, said Council was largely to blame.
“A cholera outbreak isn’t shocking with the piles of uncollected rubbish everywhere and no running water in most homes,” she said.
Another resident, Lovemore Ncube, said:
“While you are busy driving luxurious vehicles, garbage collection dololo.”
Shumba Musirivindi Masilo said Councillors and Council officials must be ashamed of themselves.
“You must be ashamed of yourselves for this disastrous event.
“As long as you don’t collect refuse and provide clean running water to residents, cholera will afflict burdened ratepayers,” said Masilo.
Samantha Murova, from Glen Norah, said:
“Garbage is everywhere in Harare and worse in high density suburbs.
“Council should do its job.
“It’s charging us a lot of money and must deliver services before cholera kills us all.”
