The other alternative is to transport them to Karoi or Kariba, which are both more than 150 kilometres away.
It is, however, very expensive to take patients across the Zambezi River, especially when a patient dies in Zambia.
In an interview on the sidelines of Earth Day commemorations last week, Hurungwe district administrator, Ms Tsana Chirau, said there had been instances where patients died in Zambia and the process of repatriating the bodies proved difficult.
“We are facing a difficult situation where our people are being forced to travel across the border to ensure that special or referred cases are handled that side.
“This poses an unusual problem in the event that someone goes on to die in foreign land,” she said.
A body takes about a week to be repatriated into Zimbabwe and involves a difficult process that will see relatives travelling as far as Lusaka to complete the necessary paperwork.
