ABOUT 500 households in Bulawayo’s Pumula South suburb have gone for two weeks without electricity after three transformers were damaged by heavy rains recently.Affected residents who spoke to Chronicle yesterday said the power utility was yet to attend to the problem.
Mandla Khumalo said residents organised a meeting on Tuesday where they resolved to approach Zesa management to address the issue.
“Yesterday we approached Zesa to find out when they are going to repair the transformers but they told us that they did not know as they were waiting for new transformers from Harare”, he said.
Joyce Runhare said: “Buying firewood is very expensive. If we try to fetch firewood from the nearby forest council rangers arrest us.”
Tatenda Mushave said unavailability of power was affecting their studies as they could not conduct studies at night.
“The transformers were damaged following heavy rainfall and since then we have been living in the dark,” said another resident who declined to be named.
Zesa public relations officer, Fullard Gwasira, could not be reached for comment as his mobile phone rang unanswered.
