This combines the illustrious expertise of the two nations’ theatrical history, which are the writer and director of the piece, Cont Mhlanga’s Amakhosi Cultural Centre and prolific South African theatre guru Mbongeni Ngema’s Art Academy in Durban.
In a telephone interview, Mhlanga revealed that the two art centres had come together to create the theatrical piece and at the same time showcase the talent of the two centres’ students.
“The event will serve to highlight Cecil John Rhodes’ journey into Africa.
“Students who graduated from the two centres, Thembi Ngwabi and Sabelo Ngema, were involved in the creation of the piece of art,” said Mhlanga.
Sabelo, who is also the child of Mbongeni and graduated from the Durban Arts Centre is the co-choreographer and musical artiste of the theatre together with Ngwabi, who graduated from Amakhosi. The musical performance is set to tour the region after various rehearsal intervals and performances of the work in progress.
In May, Sabelo will be coming to Zimbabwe with his band called Afro Beats, before the choreographers taken from Iyasa and Amakhosi Arts Academy go to South Africa for the final recording in August.
