A FUNERAL service for the late Brethren-in-Christ Church pastor, Reverend Reuben Mabhena was held in Bulawayo yesterday with several politicians attending and paying tribute to one of the most respected clergymen in the city.
Present at the service was MDC-T vice-president Thokozani Khupe and Zapu president Dr Dumiso Dabengwa among others. Rev Mabhena will be laid to rest today at Lady Stanley Cemetery.
According to the programme mourners are expected to be gathered at the church, Brethren Central by 7am, to attend a funeral service which will end at 9.30am. Mourners will leave for the cemetery after the service with burial at 10am.
Rev Mabhena passed on at Mpilo Central Hospital on Thursday after battling cancer for a long time.
The revered pastor presided over a memorial service for one of the first Zipra combatants in the liberation war, Cde Sikhwili Moyo. The service was attended by former President Cde Robert Mugabe. Rev Mabhena had been pastor at the Bulawayo Central branch since the 1980s.
In 2013, he suffered a stroke while delivering a sermon but recovered and continued with his work.
Mabhena is survived by a wife. He was 68.
