AIR Zimbabwe should consider re-introducing flights to Beijing, China, through Singapore since it is lucrative and can be sustained, an envoy has said. Zimbabwean ambassador to Singapore and Indonesia Alice Magecha said the national airline could introduce two flights to Beijing, one passing through Indonesia and the other through Singapore.
“We used to fly Air Zimbabwe through Singapore to Beijing. We gained a lot from this route because the people in the region especially Central Africa were utilising Air Zimbabwe to go to Singapore,” she said.
Air Zimbabwe suspended regional and international flights two years ago after incurring huge debts with service providers, one of who impounded its plane at Gatwick Airport in London.
However, it has managed to resume daily flights to Victoria Falls, Bulawayo and Johannesburg after it leased two Airbus aircraft.
The airline is trying to restore its viability following years of decline.
The national carrier managed to retire part of its debt mostly to South African creditors and also regained its IATA membership which had been suspended over failure to conduct regular performance audits. – New Ziana
