BLACK Rhinos Athletics Club made a clean sweep of the medals at the first edition of the National Railways of Zimbabwe Rail-Trail Annual Charity Half Marathon 21km road race yesterday.
The Army club snatched all the medals on offer in the men’s senior category in the process maintaining their dominance in local marathon events. Tendai Zimuto crossed the finishing line way ahead of the rest of the pack in a time of 1:05:07 and after clearing the 21km gruelling assignment. For shedding some sweat Zimuto was rewarded with $2 000, a centenary souvenir and a scarf courtesy of NRZ. Zimuto could not hide his excitement, stating after the race that he came to Bulawayo just to feel the event and keep fit.
“I feel very happy to win this event since this was my first time to take part here. The game plan was to look for someone to set the place then hit when time comes and the plan worked very well for me and the team. I am now looking forward to the Angola Cross country competition very soon,” said Zimuto.
In second position was Hove Tatenda followed by Wellington Varevi all from Black Rhinos Athletics Club. For their efforts the two runners collected $US$1 000 and $500 respectively.
In the women’s 21km category Rudo Mhonderwa from Power House Athletics Club was the first to arrive home ahead of Margaret Mahohoma and Lynette Tom who settled for the other places respectively.
The prizes for the women top three was the same as those for their male counterparts.
Yesterday’s race, which started and concluded at Raylton Sports Club was held as a way of celebrating the arrival of the first train in Zimbabwe on 4 November 1897 from Vryburg, South Africa through Botswana.
