Rhumba music is often defined by its fast-paced beats, and musicians who opt for a slower tempo can face difficulties achieving hit songs despite the quality of their work. This reality rings true for Dupute Warriors’ latest offering and an EP by Tshongokwe Masters, both launched over the weekend in South Africa.
Though stylistically similar, with both bands leaning into the same rhythm and beat, the two releases present their unique take on Rhumba music. Their latest works are a testament to how an album can be near perfection in all aspects of production – a rare achievement in the music industry.
Dupute Warriors’ ninth album, Linda Befike, features six tracks: Ziyamfikela, Umfowethu, Ligola Kuwe Likati Kimi, Isigumbuqu, and the Kalanga-inspired track Semha Hahni Enti. Meanwhile, Nkosikhona Ngwabi’s EP consists of three songs: Imbokodo, December, and Umbhemi Wengidi.

Both projects are a nod to the golden age of Rhumba, reminiscent of legendary acts like Ndolwane Super Sounds. Their music appeals to those with a mature ear and an appreciation for high-quality sound.
For Dupute Warriors, the vocal trio of Greyton Tshuma, Marvellous Sibanda, and Thobani Dube, who also plays bass guitar, creates a distinctive sound that stands out. Ngwabi, a talented lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, also delivers throughout his EP, with his unique voice and exceptional song-writing.
However, both bands have faced challenges over the years, particularly in live performances and promoting their music. Dupute Warriors’ band leader Thobani Dube expressed satisfaction with the album launch, which Zororo/Phumulani Funeral Company supported.
“It was a very successful launch, and the album has been well received. We hope the songs will be played on local radio stations because of their quality. The album is available on all digital platforms, but beyond that, we have live shows lined up for this festive season. So far, we’ve been booked for performances in Bubi, Dupute, and Zimnyama, with more shows to be confirmed,” Dube said.
Ngwabi, on the other hand, shared that his album launch was well attended, and the fans were pleased with the performance. He also mentioned plans to perform in Lupane and other areas during the festive season. – @themkhust
