Richard Choruma’s vision lives on

THE late former Warriors and Highlanders’ midfielder, Richard Choruma, is probably smiling from the heavens.

Choruma died two years ago but his legacy is alive through his Mzilikazi FC project in the ZIFA Bulawayo Division Two league.

Mzilikazi FC top the league table after 18 games and have set their sights on securing a slot in the country’s second-tier league next season.

Choruma established Mzilikazi FC in 2011, as a social football team.

The team’s name was inspired by the Mzilikazi high-density suburb where he grew up.

The team won promotion to the Third Division in 2015, and now believe they can actually enter the professional ranks.

Coach Fungai Hunidzarira believes, with sponsorship, they have the capacity to build a solid project.

“We are eyeing Division One football, as we want to compete and make a name for our community and give hope to the youth,” said Hunidzarira.

“Division One football is close to the PSL and it will enable us to market our youngsters.

“Like any other football team, we are experiencing financial challenges.

“But, if we get assistance, we can do what has never been done before in this community,” he said.

He hailed Nhlanhla Sibanda and Emmanuel Khumalo for shouldering the team’s financial burden.

He said Choruma always helped the team through his contacts, and they want to honour his legacy, by ensuring his project doesn’t collapse.
