Riner to fight on

PARIS. — French judoka Teddy Riner said yesterday that he will go for a third straight heavyweight Olympic gold medal at Tokyo 2020, after winning his record ninth world title in Budapest last week.

The 28-year-old is unbeaten since September 2010 and has won 134 successive fights, but was pushed to a golden point in both the semi-finals and the final in Hungary.

“I know that the road to Tokyo 2020 will be long, there’s a long way to go for that gold medal,” Riner said. “It will be difficult but not impossible. I want a challenge, challenges are what I continue for.”

The Guadeloupean now has eight individual world championship golds and one team victory since 2007, while he was also part of the France outfit that took bronze in the mixed team event on Sunday. — ESPN.
