ONE person was killed while another one was seriously injured when a vehicle they were travelling in collided head on with a haulage truck.
Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Philisani Ndebele said the accident happened on Tuesday morning near Matshiloni village about 40km out of Beitbridge Town.
“Our preliminary investigations indicate that Nhlanhla Johannes Atzinger of Harare was driving a Hyundai heading towards Masvingo with one passenger on board.

“It looks like he was trying to overtake two vehicles, which were ahead of him when an oncoming haulage truck suddenly approached from the opposite direction. Atzinger tried to return to his lane but it was too late resulting in a head on collision with the truck,” he said.

Atzinger was trapped in the wreckage and he died on the spot while the passenger sustained injuries. He was rushed to Beitbridge District Hospital. The truck driver however, escaped unhurt.

Police retrieved Atzinger’s body with the assistance of firemen from the Beitbridge Town Council and they took the body to the local hospital mortuary.

“We continue to urge motorists to adhere to the traffic rules and regulations to avoid such accidents,” said Insp Ndebele.
The accident comes barely a month after six people were killed while 37 others were seriously injured when a Pioneer cross-border bus they were travelling in ploughed into cattle at the same spot.

The driver was trying to avoid a head on collision with an oncoming haulage truck.
