TWO children died after a Malawian who was fleeing from a police roadblock was involved in an accident in Mvuma.
A court heard Charles Bishop of Moses Gama Village, Mzimba District in Malawi was driving a truck, which had 16 Malawians on board enroute to South Africa.
The court heard the other 14 passengers were injured in the early morning accident on December 19.
Bishop appeared before Gweru magistrate, Mr Musaiwona Shotgame facing two counts of culpable homicide.
The magistrate remanded him in custody to January 3.
The State is still to get the postmortem reports for the two children, Irene and Bridget Kaunda.
According to a statement from one of the passengers, Conifciouf Phiri, police stopped Bishop at a roadblock near Mvuma town.
“The driver was asked to produce his driver’s licence, passport among other documents. He handed over his licence and passport.
“As the police officer made his way round the vehicle, the driver sped off. About three kilometres from the roadblock, he lost control of the vehicle which veered off the road and overturned leading to the death of the two children,” said Phiri.
The prosecutor, Mr Bernard Nyoni said one of the children died on admission to Mvuma hospital while the other died on admission to Gweru Provincial Hospital.
