A suspected armed robber was shot and arrested hours after a robbery when police pursued him from Harare to Marondera.
The suspect, 65-year-old Kenny Magena is currently admitted at Parirenyatwa Hospital where Harare regional magistrate Tilda Mazhande convened court yesterday.
Magena was remanded in custody and was advised to appear at Marondera Magistrate’s Court on May 12.
The court heard that on April 26, Magena and his accomplices Collen Marion Banda, Kudakwashe Mawonya, Felix Tagonera and Clemence Fadzai Manyika connived and went to Costas Andreas Klostris’s place of residence where they laid an ambush on arrival.
Klostris returned home at 4.30pm and upon arrival parked his car and was attacked by the robbers, who were wearing balaclavas and armed with two pistols.
They manhandled and ordered him to disembark from his car while demanding money.
On sensing danger, he complied and told the robbers to collect money from a small basket in the car.
They stole US$13 500 and went away, leaving Klostris tied up.
He managed to untie himself and reported the matter to the police, who spotted the getaway vehicle speeding away from the scene towards Harare.
A hot pursuit ensued, and some warning shots were fired.
When the gang eventually stopped, they bolted out of the motor vehicle.
Detectives fired shots and Magena was hit on the left lower limb and he fell down.
He was subsequently arrested together with his accomplices.
The get-away vehicle was searched and a black 9mm Retay MOD 92 blank pistol with serial number RIYREROYSO1-2407082, a bottle of paper spray, 1 pair of gloves, two grinder discs and cable tiers were recovered.
The money amounting to US$13 116 was subsequently recovered from his accomplices.
Magena, who was shot, was referred to Parirenyatwa Hospital for treatment and his condition is stable.
