A Gweru family on Tuesday endured a nightmare after five armed men raided their house where the robbers had the audacity to cook and eat before getting away with cash and valuables worth US$2 500.

After storming the house, the robbers locked up the family in one room and spent nearly four hours in the house.

They were armed with a machete and a knife and would take turns to taunt the “detained” family members, asking if they wanted the food they were preparing. After feasting on spiced chicken, the robbers started beating up the family members demanding cash and valuables.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident.

“Police are investigating a case of robbery in which a family in Northlea suburb was robbed by five men armed with a machete and a knife who broke into the house through the window on Tuesday night

“One of the occupants of the house, a 52-year old woman was sleeping together with two other family members when she heard some strange noise around midnight and went to investigate.

“She was intercepted by five men who ordered her into a room. They then woke up the other two occupants and dragged them to the same room where the family was locked up,” said Insp Mahoko.

He said the suspects then searched the house and took away cellphones from all the occupants.

“They got to the kitchen, took some meat from the refrigerator and started cooking while some were relaxed in the lounge. After eating the food they then beat up their victims demanding cash,” said Insp Mahoko.
