Liberty Dube Weekender Correspondent —
TWO armed robbers last weekend pounced on a truck driver in Odzi whom they assaulted before stealing his two cellphones and $160.

The Good Samaritan driver, Laston Mabhengo (33) of Highfields in Harare had picked the three unknown robbers in Rusape at around 9pm on Sunday.

The three disguised as genuine travellers going to Odzi. Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa, said police were yet to arrest the suspects.

“The suspects got away with two cellphones – a Samsung and Huawei – after threatening to shoot the driver.

“One of the robbers was armed with a knife, while the other had a pistol,” he said and added:

“Mabhengo was driving a truck, Registration Number ACE2964 along Harare-Mutare Highway heading to Mutare.

“On board was a passenger, Patrick Tauzeni whom he had picked in Macheke. He picked three unknown people in Rusape. They told him that they wanted to disembark in Odzi.

When they reached their destination, two of the armed robbers disembarked from the truck. When the third robber was about to disembark, he produced a pistol while the other one produced a knife. They covered Tauzeni with a blanket which was in the truck.

“They threatened to shoot him and forced him to surrender all his belongings. He gave in and surrendered two cellphones – a Samsung and Huawei and $160. They quickly disappeared into the darkness leaving the two in shock.”

Mabhengo reported the matter at Mutare Central Police Station the following day.
