The two armed robbers got away with a Nokia cellphone, US$450 and other valuables.
Police in Mutare are still looking for the two robbers, with the security guard and his colleague said to be in a stable condition.
The police said the two armed robbers went to the businessman’s house at around 9pm on Saturday and gained entry by jumping over a security wall.
The robbers, who were wearing masks, then laid an ambush near the cottage and a few minutes later they confronted the businessman’s wife who called for help.
The businessman was also confronted by the robbers who then tied the couple’s hands and legs with an electric cord.
They ransacked the cottage and stole a cellphone and cash.
On their way out, they were confronted by a security guard manning the premises and one of the robbers pointed a gun at him, ordering him to comply with their orders.
The guard did not comply and the three wrestled resulting in the gun discharging three shots.
One of the shots hit the security guard on the left leg and the robbers took a .303 rifle he had which they later hid in a garden before disappearing.
The neighbourhood watch committee member who lives nearby heard the gunshots and teamed up with his colleagues to investigate.
Police said the group came across the two while walking along a road at around 9:30pm before confronting them.
One of the robbers then fired a shot which hit the neighbourhood watch committee member on the thigh, resulting in his colleagues fleeing in different directions.
The robbers took the opportunity to disappear.
A report was made to the police who are still investigating the case.
Police are warning members of the public who hold large amounts of cash to be wary of such criminals.
Some of the criminals are believed to be working in cahoots with security guards, domestic workers and company employees to obtain information about movement of cash.
