SOUTHERN ROCKS began their 2025/26 Logan Cup campaign on a winning note after cruising to a four-wicket victory over Tuskers at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo yesterday.

Set 201 to win, Rocks comfortably reached the target with more than an hour to spare on the final day, punishing Tuskers for a poor second innings batting display that left them defending too little on home turf.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Tuskers posted 242 in their first innings, built around half-centuries from Tinotenda Maposa and Tanunurwa Makoni. Fast bowler Ernest Masuku then ripped through Rocks’ line up with figures of 6/66, helping the hosts to a 33 run first innings lead after dismissing the visitors for 209.

But that advantage quickly evaporated. Tuskers collapsed for 167 in their second innings, with only Masuku (45 off 63) and Tanatswa Bechani (33 off 124) showing real resistance. The pair added a fighting 59 runs for the ninth wicket after resuming day four on 109/8. Earlier, Bechani had shared another key stand of 49 runs with Ainsley Ndlovu (23).

Roy Kaia led Rocks’ bowling attack with 3/43, while Tafara Chingwara, Takudzwa Chataira, and Owen Muzondo each claimed two wickets.

Rocks’ reply began with intent. Openers Matthew Campbell (35) and Panashe Taruvinga (36) combined for a 69 run partnership before Ndlovu broke through with an lbw dismissal. Dube and Ndlovu struck again in quick succession to remove Taruvinga and Kaia, leaving Rocks wobbling at 79/3.

However, Cephas Zhuwao (27) and Jonathan Campbell (41) steadied the innings before wicketkeeper Takudzwa Tsiga sealed the chase with an unbeaten 35 off 43 balls.

Ndlovu finished with figures of 3/40, while Dube took 2/23 and Brian Chari chipped in with 1/36 for Tuskers.

Both sides will renew their rivalry at the same venue tomorrow in a Pro50 Championship clash as Tuskers seek immediate redemption.
