A 21-year-old Epworth man yesterday appeared in court charged with murder after he allegedly stabbed his roommate with a kitchen knife following a dispute over $8 change.

Emmanuel Sande was not asked to plead when he appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Milton Serima.

Mr Serima remanded him in custody to February 26 and advised him to apply for bail at the High Court.

The prosecutor Mr Sebastian Mutizirwa alleged that on February 11, Sande and his roommate (name withheld) had a misunderstanding over money that was meant for rent.

Sande had allegedly given his roommate money that he had to combine with his to pay rent.

However, the roommate had to give Sande $8 as change, but failed.

The court heard the two were involved in a heated argument that degenerated into a fistfight.

It is alleged that as the two were fighting, Sande picked a 25,4cm long kitchen knife and stabbed his roommate once in the left chest.

The roommate was rushed to Epworth Clinic where he died on arrival.
