Elizabeth Mhlanga (65) from Makokoba suburb in Bulawayo, has dragged her son Luka Mhlanga (43) to court, for allegedly beating her up and hurling insults at her.
Luka recently appeared before Bulawayo magistrate, Mr Ernest Muzembi facing assault charges. He pleaded guilty to the charge and apologised to his mother.
The magistrate convicted and slapped him with a nine-month jail term. Five months were suspended on condition of good behaviour, which means he will serve four months in jail.
In sentencing him, the magistrate said Luka was dangerous to his family and society at large. The magistrate said Luka resorted to violence in solving a conflict and that was unwarranted.
In a victim impact statement, Elizabeth said: “I have suffered enough at the hands of this child. Whenever he is drunk he hurls insults at me and other family members. His wayward behaviour has left me depressed and traumatised,” she said, holding tears back.
She added: “I decided to sleep with my daughters in their bedroom, after that he branded me a lesbian. I’m tormented. I pray that he could be locked up in jail because I’m now afraid of him.”
A court heard that on 28 February, Elizabeth retired to bed with his daughters. After a few hours, Luka arrived home from a booze and banged on her mother’s door. He stormed into the bedroom and hurled insults at his mother.
Things went a gear up as he punched his mother in the face. His mother suffered a swollen face and a painful ear. The incident was reported to the police leading to his arrest.
