AUSTIN (Texas) – Organisers of the Beer Mile World Championship in Texas said the winner ran a mile, and intermittently chugged a total four beers, in just over five minutes. Corey Gallagher, 27, a mail carrier from Canada, was the first to cross the finish line Wednesday at the Circuit of the Americas racetrack with a final time of 5:00:23, which was seven seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Jim Finlayson, but four seconds shy of the beer mile world record.
The race required runners to chug a 12-ounce beer at the starting line and then stop to chug another beer at each quarter mile.
Gallagher and the winner of the women’s division, Beth Herndon, 29, were each awarded $2,500 for their victories. Herndon was awarded a further $2,500 for finishing in a world record time of 6:17.
The beer used in the competition was a special blend prepared by local company Hops and Grain Brewing.
“We made a German blonde ale, lowered the carbonation a little bit so it’s not as intense and bubbly,” owner and veteran beer mile runner Josh Hare told KTBC-TV. “Anybody can do it but to do it without losing it and doing it fast is a whole ‘nother ball game.”- UPI.
