A wave of runners, walkers and wellness warriors is expected to flood the streets of Bulawayo on July 20, as the Old Mutual West Zimbabwe Conference hosts the second edition of its cancer awareness half marathon.

The race, which starts and ends at Bulawayo Adventist High School, is more than just a sporting event, it’s a powerful community statement against one of the world’s deadliest diseases.

“We’re expecting over 300 participants,” said event manager Charlotte Tabvuma. “This isn’t just about fitness, it’s about making a real difference. Proceeds will go towards Island Hospice Care, which supports cancer patients and their families.”

Already, more than 150 runners have confirmed their participation, with fitness club Fitness First pledging to send dozens of athletes. The event will feature a 21,1km half marathon, a 10km run and a 5km walk for those who prefer a lighter pace.

“This year, we’ve made it clear, everyone’s welcome,” said Tabvuma. “That includes people living with disabilities. Everyone who finishes will receive a medal.”

Registration is already open online, and the organisers are encouraging Bulawayo residents, and even visitors to the city, to join the cause. But the day won’t just be about the race. There’ll be jumping castles for kids, stalls selling food and clothes, a boot camp and a high energy Zumba session to raise extra funds.

Pastor Khumbulani Ncube of the Seventh day Adventist Church, a key partner in the initiative, said there’ll also be free cervical, prostate and breast cancer screenings conducted by Island Hospice.

“This half marathon is about encouraging physical activity in a society that’s becoming increasingly inactive,” said Ncube. “Being fit improves your ability to fight disease and events like this bring that message home.”

Old Mutual remains the event’s lead sponsor, but Tabvuma hopes more partners will come on board to expand the impact of what’s already shaping up to be a meaningful day for the city.
