AS a precautionary measure to curb violence during the election period, police in Rusape have banned the carrying of weapons in public places. Officer Commanding Rusape District Chief Superintendent Garikai Gwangwava issued a prohibition order banning the possession of weapons in public places for the next one and half months.

The ban also covers some areas in Buhera which fall under the Rusape policing district.
Chief Supt Gwangwava was acting in line with Section 14 (1) of the Public Order and Security Act (POSA) Chapter 11.17.
“I Garikai Gwangwava being the regulatory authority for Rusape Police in terms of Section 4 (1) of Public Order and Security Act Chapter 11.17 do hereby give a notice of temporary prohibition of carrying in a public (whether openly or by concealment) place or public thoroughfare or public display in terms of Section 14 (2) as read with Section 14 (1) of the said Act,” he said.

Chief Supt Gwangwava said the prohibition starts from July 15 to August 30, 2018.
“The weapons that are subject to the ban are catapults, knives, machetes, axes, knobkerries, swords or daggers and traditional weapons such as spears or like weapons whatsoever deemed to occasion public disorder or a breach of the peace in Rusape Police District,” he said.

Makoni and Buhera districts have recorded a peaceful environment as the candidates vying for seats during the July 30 elections are canvassing for votes.
President Mnangagwa has on numerous occasions called for people to observe peace during the elections period.
