Rushinga gets food assistance

Speaking at the recent handover ceremony of food assistance to the Rushinga community, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Paurina Mpariwa applauded local non-governmental organisations for complementing Government’s efforts in alleviating poverty in the country.

She said Government has also contributed 35 000 tonnes of maize to assist more than 100 000 households. “This means Government has its people at heart. Recent research shows that over 1,6 million people – one in five of the rural population  – are food insecure with Matabeleland and Masvingo being the hardest hit,” she said.

WFP country director, Mr Felix Bamezon said the donation would assist vulnerable communities. “This donation ensures vulnerable families badly hit by last year’s drought receive food assistance,” he said.
